Art Doesn’t Pay by Antonio “Nino” Del Prete

Antonio “Nino” Del Prete caught our attention with his contemporary take on historical paintings. Apparently, we’re not the only ones… Johnny Depp was among the attendees at Nino latest show at Hollywood’s famed Château Marmot next to Spanish artist Domingo Zapata and actor/painter Jordi Molla.

Through his collection, Art Doesn’t Pay, Nino hopes to challenge people by giving historical paintings a new meaning that applies to the current world. His artistic revisions highlight present issues such as the recent oil crisis and America’s ongoing fight with obesity, among others. “Taking famous paintings and reworking them allows me to give them a new meaning that is applicable to today’s crazy world,” Nino told us about his work.

Nino’s early paintings were mostly portraits of Hollywood celebrities. His extraordinary talent and a bit of good luck is what eventually led Nino to take the art world by storm. His art came across a show producer, who eventually asked him to participant in one of his shows. “That first show I was a part of helped create demand for my pieces and that was the turning point for me as an artist,” Nino said. “Frankly, I was happy to sell a few pieces and I ended up selling everything that evening!”

Nino’s show with Domingo Zapata and Jordi Molla, is headed to Miami next. It will be part of Art Basel Miami Beach, one of the most prestigious art shows in the Americas. Nino gave us an exclusive rundown of what we can expect for that show – Medusa and Madonna are among his next subjects.

In addition to his art, Nino is also a successful actor and talented musician. “I mainly can’t stay still,” he told us about his many projects. Nino’s work has inspired us and other contemporary art aficionados around the globe, this is way we’ve placed Nino on our list of “Artist to Watch in 2012.” To learn more about Nino and his upcoming shows, friend him on Facebook at Art Doesn’t Pay
